SCANNED EMOTION

MY STATE OF MIND
MAY 18,2014

My scanned emotion I was given was sanity. To the best of my abilities, I went and scanned my face displaying my emotion. Viewers will see that I am under a jacket a on my phone texting.

When I viewed the photo via Paint Net the picture was in color. I then took my face and the sweater and shaded it black it way. This is an example of contrast. Noticed how I left my phone in color. Here I am emphasizing how my phone plays a vital role in my life. Now when you take a closer look there is a symmetrical balance between my face and phone unifying reality.

In my opinion, I feel that the definition of this scan is fitting into society. The message of my artwork that in order to feel accepted, you have to follow certain behaviors and standards. Back in the early 90’s, being on your cellphone was considered an abnormal and obnoxious behavior. However now forward to 2014, people everywhere fast are on their phones either making calls, browsing the web and texting. This scanner will tell viewers that I’m a young man trying to be normal by following social standards.

Do I feel that this piece is successful; I personally do feel that it is. If you observe closely or look through it through an abstract perspective you will notice that my project is presenting all elements of design. I feel that this project is created neatly because I am contrasting colors making it look good. In my heart and to my best abilities, I successfully translated the feeling, emotion and meaning of sanity into a Visual Representation.

PROJECTED IDENTIY

ME AND ME ONLY
MAY 14, 2014

What is an identity? An identity consists of qualities that make an individual stand out from others. In this project, I had to collect five items that identifies myself and scan them. These items I chose in my opinion are rather random but tell a interesting story.

I consider myself as a very outgoing and diverse individual. However I can only scan such few items to tell a rather interesting story. The items I ended up choosing were a brochure of the University of British Columbia, my school ID, a Starbucks Gift Card, The novel The Kite Runner, a Queen album, and lastly a Bollywood movie called Rangeela (Colorful). I then went and scanned them and emphasized some of the items that in my opinion will give more weight of my personality.

One of the major influences of my life is Bollywood movies. I have a been a Bollywood fanatic since the age of three and always been fascinated by the chorography, and acting. From the huge collection in my home, I chose Rangeela because not only it’s a childhood favorite, but the message of pursuing your dreams stills remains fresh in my mind. To makes viewers aware of the importance of this film, I brightened the DVD, increased the font of the letters and emphasized the image of Aamir Khan who is one of my favorite actors. I did the same thing for the Queen album. Queen is my favorite rock band of all time and Freddie Mercury in my book a role model. Both these items unify my vast differences in music and how I am optimistic. Given the fact that I’m about to graduate high school in a week, I decided to use the brochure of the University of British Columbia. I didn’t much emphasize in it because I wanted to keep it a secret from everyone. I also changed the colors and texture of the Starbucks Gift Card by poster zing and oil sketching. This goes for my school ID except that instead of using an oil sketch I pencil sketched and outline the shape and design. Lastly I brighten the back cover of The Kite Runner by enlarging the words and brightening the colors. To empathize my point of how this book changed my life, I also added in some blue lights to lure audiences of how the novel can at certain times be depressing.

Do I think that this project is successful, absolutely. I took five items that identifies me and no one else and scanned them to tell a story. I unfed all items by enlarging and highlighting some of the most personal items contrasting how these interests make up a whole new individual. Hopefully at college, I am able to surround myself with people who share at least one or two interests ranging film, music, art or even coffee.

ENVRIONMENTAL SCANNER

ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNER
MAY 8,2014

The environment is an important aspect of life. It tells the history of how a certain community has grown over the years and wetther or not has kept the standards of a clean environment. Living in San Francisco throughout my entire life, I have witnessed of how the city has pushed for a cleaner atmosphere. Fortunately for me, I live in a community that strongly emphasizes of maintaining a cleaner living space, or I thought I did.

While walking around my local park, I noticed that there were many leaves, wood twigs, and flower buds lying all over the place.  I picked up number of them ranging in size and color. In addition, I was also surprised that I found a half bitten apple lying on the ground. I did something that I rarely do, picked it up and put in my bag. Finally I went to my classroom and scanned the objects, which is where my creative side started too kicked in.

When I viewed the actual scan on the computer, I noticed that was negative space everywhere which would distract the viewers from the main idea. What really frustrated me the most was that rather than walking a few more paces to the trash can, someone instead just threw the apple on the ground. In order to get that point across, I enlarged the apple and inserted in right in the center, emphasizing my frustration. To get the rid of the negative space, I duplicated the leaves that I thought stood out the most and began to make a pattern of repetition. I also did that with the wood twig to not only get rid of the white space, but also try to add more detail into my message. This is an example of contrasting two different objects but correlating them into one big idea.

My main message in this project is to maintain a safe and clean environment. Enlarging the apple, duplicating both the green leaf, and twig, I am unifying all three objects. This is my way of telling people that it is possible to live in a clean environment if you put your heart in it. So whenever you say litter lying in the ground, be a good Samaritan, pick it up, and depending on what type of litter it is either compost or recycle it.

CHILDHOOD

CHILDHOOD
APRIL 22, 2014

Childhood, a special opportunity that is only experienced once throughput’s one life time. Once it has passed on, you can only rethink of the times where was life was plain simple. In this case, my artwork goes back into time where instead of having a Play Station 3 I played on the PC along with attending a small private school rather than a big public school.

Right when you look at the picture you will notice that I emphasized two important electronics, a Gateway PC and my Nintendo Game. From preschool to third grade I was an obsessive PC gamer mostly playing educational and racing games.  computer games. I mostly played games by Humongous Entertainment a company that took possible realistic solutions one may face in life and find solution increasing my problem solving skills. Post third game to now I shifted towards playing game consoles with the Gamecube being the first one I owned and playing it almost every day.

The second picture which is emphasized is a logo of The Laurel School a small private school. Here is where I went for my elementary and middle school. The background is a picture capturing the city of San Francisco, where I was born and raised for the last eighteen years of my life. Lastly in the center is an image my baby cousin. In this case he resembles me when he is older,  I will show him the artwork explaining how I used spend my time when I was his age.

This artwork to me is very special because I am presenting a chapter of my life. Earlier I was never an outgoing person. I preferred staying indoors feeling isolated. Since I had difficulties making friends, I would befriend fictional characters that I played with because they had similar traits and personalities I could relate to. Given those reasons I feel that the artwork is successful where I emphasized two game consoles that remain vivid in my mind along with presenting a different educational path I took.

FACE

WHO ARE YOU
NOVEMBER 15, 2013

What might one say when looking at this photo? Is that an alien? Is that a human in the future? Or is it some mutated creature that has an awkward body due to unfortunate genes?  I view it as as an alien that represents characteristics of myself.

Viewing this project for a few seconds one will notice that compared to a typical human body, there are some vast differences. For starters, the alien has a stomach and legs of a letter H. Humans don't have body letters as shapes. Instead of oval eyes, the artist substitutes it with the @ symbol.. In my opinion, the arms really stick out the most because if you look closely, both are thick but are different in lengths. Other differences include antennas as hair, and one thick and thin eyebrow.

In the first paragraph I mentioned how this project goes deeper into characteristics of myself. Something that a typical viewer won't notice is the emphasis  of the H's and the arms.I am trying to contrast with what is normal and what isn't. Being diagnosed with Autism at an early I posses certain characteristics that some may consider "awkward.". In addition, I discreetly and abstractly conveyed the message of  "be who you are and don't be ashamed of it". Lastly though not obvious  I brought in unity. Despite having unusual body traits, the alien happily comes up with a solution to work around the obstacles.

In conclusion, I do feel  that this project is successful. Here I was abstractly conveying the message of  how the idea of "being normal" doesn't exist in society. In life, you will encounter people who are completely different whether through, race, gender, ethnicity, personality, or disability. Don't be judgmental and for those who feel they are, put that aside and live life the way you want to.  Remember you are in control of your own destiny and those opinions against you, doesn't matter.

WARHOL SELFIE

LET ME TAKE A SELFIE
FEBRUARY 24, 2014

Andy Warhol as we all know was an artist way ahead of his time. His artwork today is very relatable especially towards to  the younger generation given the fact that the majority of them take selfies. Warhol took that idea and duplicated them. In this project I similarly using the colors located on the color wheel.

In this project my art teacher took a selfie of myself and I copied it nine times. I then used various colors from the color wheel and combined them to make a complementary colors. Each set resembles  a certain mood I am going through. Some of the photos show neutral feelings whereas some show anger, sadness and excitement.

In my opinion I feel that the definition of this project is to be you. The message of this art is to explore your inner self and document it through photography. This project tells viewers that I love taking photos and want to tell the world how I stand out.
I feel like that the project showed some of the abilities I have to offer. However I noticed that there are some room of improvements that can be easily fixed. Such problems include keeping the picture in an exact size (none too big and none too small) and not leaving any white spots. Personally I feel that this is a good start explaining how Warhol has influenced the youth today

KOI MIL GAYA

KOI MIL GAYA
JANUARY 15,2014

Music is a form of art that allows people to hear the message musician and singers. Songs such as Happy by Pharrel Williams and Let's Groove by Earth, Wind, and Fire present a positive message. However when one hears a song  such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, the message is one expressing frustration. At the end of the day, all musicians and singers paint an image in the observer's mind which what this project is inspired from.

The visual background I chose was the entrance to the  Lone Mountain Campus of the University of San Francisco. The song I selected is a popular Bollywood duet called Koi Mil Gaya (I Found Someone). The singers are Udit Narayan and Chitra. The music composed by Rajesh Roshan is mixture of modern and electronic thus presenting a positive idea. Finally the sunny and warm weather adds a little twist of intimacy, a thought that any observer could relate to.

The song and picture will first leave observers baffled of how a Bollywood song and a University correlate with one another.By ignoring the picture and knowing that Koi Mil Gaya translates to "I Found Someone", one could assume that the song is expressing the happiness of two people finding their soul mates. Now adding the background of USF, the idea gets a little more complex and personal. The way I see it when one attends college, not only they find their soul mates they also discover their career path, personality, people they feel comfortable communicating with and making life long connections with friends and professors.

What does the project tmean? Personally I feel that the project means happiness. The message of this project is to tell viewers to reach for the sky. This project tells viewers that I am a young man who has a goal and is determined to work on it.

After taking constant pictures and choosing the correct music, I could say that this project is another successful one. I feel that the project works because the message is emphasizing other important life factors besides love. If I were given the opportunity to redo this project, I would have someone stand under the gates of the Lone Mountain Campus which will give observers the  emotion that individual is feeling at that moment.
